Morley gets a new Town Crier

Amidst all the doom and gloom of the global pandemic, Morley continues to shine with messages of hope and positivity announced by their newly-appointed Town Crier.  If you happened to be shopping local in Morley town centre on Thursday morning, 2nd July, you may have been present outside Morley Town Hall to help make history with the first ever notice delivered by the newly-appointed Town Crier, Mr Steven Holt.

The first notice focussed on words of thanks to essential workers and remembering those who have lost their lives to Covid-19 and sent condolences to families in Morley who have lost their loved ones.  The notice ended on a positive message welcoming the reopening of our local hospitality trade and independent retailers we have in Morley and encouraging people to shop local, whilst remaining vigilant and safe during these unprecedented times.

The Town Crier was joined by the Mayor and Mayoress of Morley, Councillor Andrew Hutchison and Ms Rachael Kennedy.  Councillor Hutchison said:-

“This is a fantastic addition for our town and a role that we know will flourish as we ease out of lockdown.  With our vast history, we feel the role of a Town Crier only adds to our ability to put on a show with real pomp and ceremony, something the residents of Morley love to see!”

The role of Town Crier is a voluntary one and the new uniform has been wholly funded by Morley Town Council to enhance our already rich heritage, of which we are all fiercely proud.  The uniform features the intrinsic detail of the Morley town crest.
