War Memorial to be Rededicated

The Mayor visits The War Memorial to see how work progressed

Following recent renovation work The War Memorial in Scatcherd Park is to be rededicated at a service to be held on Sunday 29th June 2008, the weekend of Veteran's Day.

Work has been ongoing for some time cleaning and renovating The Memorial as well as reinstating the inscription on the Memorial.

The Mayor has been active in campaigning for the work on The Memorial to be carried out, funding provided by Leeds City Council's Outer South Area Committee.

As part of the renovation works the names of ten servicemen missing from the Memorial will be unveiled at the Service of Rededication.  The names were not included on The Memorial and following a request in the Morley Observer and Advertiser a number of families cam forward asking that there loved ones from the First and Second World Wars be added.

The Memorial is one of only two in England to feature Britannia as a central

 

The Service of Rededication

The Service took place on Sunday 29th June 2008 at 3.30pm.

Those present included representatives from The Lord Lieutenants Office, The Yorkshire Regiment, The Leeds Rifles Comrades Association, The Royal British Legion, The Normandy Veterans Association, The City of Leeds 168 Squadron ATC, The Salvation Army, Churches together in Morley and Morley Town Council.

Also present was The Mayor of Morley Councillor Terry Grayshon and Members of Morley Town Council.
